A mother - daughter team, Heather van der Breggen and Rickee-Lee Webster are pursuing and enabling others to experience art.
Art Farm was born of the Simple...With a Twist owners, and Heather's husband, Abraham van der Breggan. The second Art Farm event will be held on Saturday, June 14 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the van der Breggen acreage.
When Rickee-Lee and Heather are together energy overflows, laughter fills the room, and the creative juices join forces.
"Making art has always been my way to connect. Time evaporates when I am absorbed in the stroke of a brush or the texture of plaster or fabric. I am fulfilled," said Heather.
Rickee-Lee hadn't painted before, but was inspired by letters written between her grandparents. She picked up a paintbrush and joined her mother in creating a 45 piece exhibition that served as a tribute to two people who influenced their lives.
"She is much freer than I am, and can push me outside my comfort zone," said Rickee-Lee.
In 2009, Heather and Rickee-Lee formed "Simplewith a Twist".
The duo is in the process of creating pieces for their show called "Love, Hate and Everything in Between".
"Love, Hate and Everything in Between is based on our relationship. It incorporates words, pieces that inspire us. IT's about the struggles and the glory through working together and our personal relationship. We are mother and daughter and friends," said Rickee-Lee.
In 2012, Heather and Rickee-Lee came up with a way to get people into the art scene. They want to expose and have people open their hearts to art.
"We decided to have a Christmas sale and invited artists that now make up the Art Farm board," said Heather.
The sale was called "Convergence", which was set in their home. Heather, Rickee-Lee and Heather's husband Abraham weren't sure how well it was going to go over seeing as it snowed the day of their show.
"We had 200 people come out. That's when we decided to have it outside."
Art Farm has a two-fold intention. It is a gathering of community and families to enjoy being outside and exposed to a variety of different art and music. It also supports the community through getting non-profit organizations involved, such as the Youth Centre, who will be at Art Farm this year with a barbeque.
"We are following our dreams, and we want to support other people's dreams, whatever it is they do," said Heather.
They embrace the slogan for Simple...With a Twist, "Achieving personal freedom through the creation of art."
Rickee-Lee and Heather invite the community to come out and enjoy the day at Art Farm on Saturday, June 14 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the van der Breggen acreage, located five minutes from Weyburn on Highway 35 south. Follow the Art Farm signs.
