Charges laid following non-sanctioned fight event

Charges of engaging in a prize fight have been laid against the owner and a promoter of Prestige Fight Club as the result of an investigation on the Mixed Martial Arts event held in Weyburn on September 28, 2013.

The allegations leading to the Weyburn Police investigation was that the event was non-sanctioned.

This investigation was as a result of changes to the Criminal Code which came into effect in June, 2013. The changes to the Criminal code require events such as a Mixed Martial Arts contest to receive sanctioning under the authority of a provincially authorized athletic board or commission.

A 48-year-old male from Beinfait, and a 45-year-old male from Qu'Appelle, were issued a Summons to appear for Court on Tuesday, March 11 at 10 a.m. in the Weyburn Court House.

Police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver near Government Road and Souris Avenue on January 26. Police located and stopped the suspect vehicle a short time later. The driver was not impaired but further investigation did find the suspect to be in possession of a quantity of marijuana. The 26-year-old male was arrested and charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and later released to attend court in March, 2014.

Police responded to a domestic dispute at a northeast residence on January 26. Police calmed the situation and then resolved the issues by helping transport one of the individuals involved to another residence.

On January 26, police responded to a southwest residence for an attempted break in. Police found the residence had their front door damaged but entry was not gained. There are no suspects at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Police received a complaint of mischief to a vehicle on January 26. The complainant had parked their vehicle behind a local downtown business over night and when they returned to their vehicle the passenger window had been smashed out.

While on patrol January 26, police located vehicle near a downtown bar and the 27-year-old male driver was found to be impaired. The subsequent investigation also found the male to be in possession of crack cocaine. The male was arrested and charged with being over .08 and possession of cocaine. He was later released to appear in court in March.

Police also responded to a complaint of a female causing a disturbance on the street January 26. Police located and arrested a 22-year-old female. She was charged with being drunk in public and lodged in cells until sober.

Police responded to a local bar with a complaint of two females leaving without paying their bill on January 25. Police were able to locate the two suspects in another bar. The investigation resulted in charges being laid on one of the females for breach of conditions.

Police responded to a local bar for a complaint of a female that had stolen a jacket and cell phone and then had fled on January 25. The subsequent investigation also found the same suspect being responsible for stealing items from a local hotel. Police have identified the suspect and investigation is continuing.

Police responded to a report of a fight outside of a local bar on January 24. It appears an unknown individual approached two males and an altercation ensued. The unknown male fled the scene prior to police arrival.

On January 23 police received a tip that a young offender who is on probation was breaching their conditions by drinking alcohol. After an investigation, the young offender was arrested and charged with breach of probation. The young offender was released from custody and will appear in court in February.

Police received a report of a male taking keys from the victim and then stealing his truck while at a local drinking establishment on January 22. The victim found the truck a short distance away with significant damage. The investigation into this matter continues.

On January 22 police received a complaint of a hit and run. The complainant was stopped for a train on 3rd Street SE when a white GMC truck backed into the complainant's vehicle, driving away through an adjacent parking lot. The investigation is ongoing.

Police responded to a hit and run accident in the 100 Block of 4th Avenue South on January 21. The investigation identified the other party responsible and the situation was resolved without criminal charges.
