Keeping Weyburn clean is everyone's responsibility

Weyburn City Council urged residents to help keep the city clean as litter can be found in ditches and on the city streets.

Council discussed the litter issue at Monday's regular meeting after hearing an Environmental Resource Committee report about a littering problem at a local business is having where the owners are then responsible to haul garbage to the dump where they have to pay tipping fees.

Councillor Dick Michel said the previous competition between Estevan and Weyburn enticed people to clean up the city streets with what was the Golden Garbage Can. A few years ago, the Golden Garbage Can was awarded to the cleanest city between Weyburn and Estevan. However in its absence perhaps the incentive to keep the streets clean has also declined.

"I love the city of Weyburn and I know must people do, but we have to be responsible. Don't be throwing things around," he said.

Councillor Nancy Styles agreed with Michel saying residents should focus on clean up especially in the spring.

"It's our personal responsibility. We need to get everyone on board and get some pride in our city," she said. "It's very costly to get the parks crew out to clean up the ditches."

As part of the city's clean-up campaign, Hazardous Waste Day will be held on Saturday, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Weyburn Fire Hall/Workshop. SARCAN will also be open at this time to accept electronics and paint only.
