The members of the Crocus Quilters Guild of Weyburn will host their “Spring Bouquet of Quilts VI” at the Weyburn Curling Rink on Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30.
The Friday show runs from 4 to 8 p.m. and the Saturday show runs from 10-4 p.m. Admission is $5.
Over 150 entries will be on display. Works of fibre art and practical household items will be exhibited.
The Crocus Quilters Guild presents this opportunity to see this “old” new craft of quilting as practiced by their members. The craft of quilting has changed due to new techniques. The essentials are still layers of fabric held together with stitching, both hand and machine.
The Crocus Quilters Guild will present the work of a local featured quilter, Dorothy Benning.
Dorothy was inspired by the beautiful quilts her mother created with her “foot-powered” treadle sewing machine, but never found enough time in her busy life to learn the art herself until 1998, when she attended a quilting class given by Sandy Cook.
Her sewing machine has been busy ever since. She enjoys the entire quilting process from finding the right pattern and material, sewing the blocks, to constructing the layers to complete the quilt.
Machine embroidering often gives her items added beauty. She is constantly learning new techniques and ideas and is an inspiration to all quilters.
On Friday evening Barb Dawson, a graduate from the Weyburn Collegiate who now lives in Saskatoon, is presenting a Trunk Show. She is an avid quilter who is enthralled by colour. Although she began as a traditional quilter, her quilts span over a large number of years and show her growing interest in design and innovation. They were accepted into the National Juried Shows of CQA in 2009 and 2012.
Crocus Guild is very pleased to showcase Barb’s works. Tickets are available at the door. Her show begins at 8 p.m. and admission is $10.
There will be opportunity to fine-tune creative skills by attending sessions given by vendors about jellyrolls, disappearing pinwheels, fabric books, creative grid rulers and applique techniques.
The vendors with displays at the show will be Quilter’s Haven and Heather’s Quilting Palette from Moose Jaw, For the Love of Quilting from Hanna, Alta., Quilter’s Den from Morden, Man., and Christa Marcotte from Second Story Quilting in Torquay.
Times for these demonstrations will be posted at the entry. Those attending may also vote for the People’s Choice Award. The winner will be presented with a Rosette from the Canadian Quilters Association by show chair Marg Stewart.
