Operation Christmas Child is a campaign that dates back to 1990. After growing considerably, the gift box campaign was adopted by the charity known as Samaritan's Purse. The intention behind the giving is to allow everyone the opportunity to participate in a simple hands-on project which Samaritan's Purse believes reflects the true meaning of Christmas, the gift of giving.

The boxes are filled with items such as school supplies, hygiene products, toys and crafts. Each box is given without any restriction regarding race, gender or religion. Over the years, Operation Christmas Child has distributed over 100 million boxes and saw Canadians donate 664,000 in 2013 alone.

The week of November 17 to the 23 is the official collection week for the campaign. The gift boxes are available at the Wholesale Club, Dollarama and Prairie Sky Co-op. Participants need not worry if they cannot find an official box as any similar size box will be accepted. Along with the filled boxes, donators are asked for $7 to cover the cost of shipping the containers worldwide.
