Weyburn Skating Club in conjunction with Skate Saskatchewan is pleased to announce Jean Norman/STARskate 2015 Skating Competition will take place February 27, 28 and March 1, 2015 in Weyburn, SK.

The competition will begin Friday February 27 @ 8:00 AM in both Crescent Point Place and Tom Zandee Sports Arena continuing throughout the weekend until Sunday March 1st at 4:00 PM.  The competition will run until 9:30 PM both Friday and Saturday.

The events will bring 416 skaters to our city for a weekend of competition and fun. We encourage the public to come out to enjoy the competition and cheer on our athletes as they compete.   There is no entry fee for spectators and we hope to show the skaters from all over the province what a great sporting community Weyburn can be.

Jean Norman was born and raised in Saskatoon.  She began figure skating in the early years of the Saskatoon Figure Skating Club, being encouraged by her father who took up skating in order to accompany her.  She was one of the first skaters from Saskatoon Figure Skating Club to take CFSA tests.  Some of these necessitated travelling to Winnipeg by train.

During the 1940's Jean lived in the United States and while there became a Professional, teaching both ice and roller skating in the State of New York.

After returning to Saskatoon, Jean regained her amateur status and put all her energy and zeal into skating.  She repeated some of the Canadian Dance Tests and was active in all club activities holding practically every Office throughout the years.   Her work as Chairman of the Judges Committee was outstanding.  She went up the Judging ladder until she became a Gold Judge in Figures and Dancing and Silver Pairs Judge.  Not only did she foster skating in young people but she was an ardent advocate of skating for adults taking part in Veterans Dance Competitions many times.

Every competition saw her actively engaged as Judge, Accountant or both.   The demands on her time became greater and greater weekends, evenings and holidays were spent in long hours of judging and arduous miles of traveling, however she gave unstintingly far beyond her physical capabilities.

In December of 975 Jean Norman succumbed to cancer and this Competition is held annually in her memory, but her most enduring memorial will remain the example of enthusiasm, courage and devotion to duty which she gave to all wholes lives she touched.

For further information on the competition or the local competitors please contact Kim Borschowa wadekimb@gmail.com or 306-861-3846 to arrange interviews.  We look forward to seeing you throughout the weekend as you report on this significant event for the City of Weyburn.
