Weyburn Police warn of telephone scams

Police have received complaints of telephone scams over the past week. One is the 'grandparent' scam where a supposed grandchild has run afoul of the law and needs money. The other is that someone has won something but needs to provide a credit card to claim the prize.

Citizens are urged to be very cautious if they receive any type of telephone call from someone or some organization they do not know.

On January 12, police were dispatched to a report of hysterical person in the street. Upon police arrival they found an intoxicated 21-year-old female who was screaming and crying. This person was arrested for being drunk in public and lodged in police cells until sober.

Police received a complaint of a 39 year old female having been assaulted in her residence by an unknown person. The victim had been asleep in her apartment when she heard a noise at her door, when she opened the door, she was assaulted by an unknown female who then fled. The victim received minor injuries. Although no suspect has yet been identified it is likely that this is not a random incident and that the victim believes she was targeted. Police continue to investigate.

The police conducted a traffic stop of an unregistered vehicle on January 10. As a result the 28-year-old male driver was issued a ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle. As well a 27-year-old male passenger was found to be in breach of conditions found in a release document.

- On January 9 police were called to a local business regarding an issue with an unruly customer. As a result of police intervention the store received its property back and the 25-year-old male was issued a ban from the store.

The Weyburn Police responded to a report of a two vehicle collision on Highway 39 near the rail crossing on January 9. A vehicle was stopped at the train track crossing when struck from behind by the other vehicle. A 46-year-old male driver of the stopped vehicle was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police responded to a report of a two vehicle collision on 5th Street at Prairie Avenue on January 9. A vehicle was travelling south on 5th Street when it collided with a vehicle travelling east on Prairie Avenue. The 45-year-old male driver of the eastbound vehicle was charged with proceeding from a stop sign before safe. He sustained minor injuries and was checked out at the hospital. The 36-year-old female driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

On January 7, police were called to a local VLT outlet. A patron had been playing a machine when she stepped away for a moment. An unknown male took it as an opportunity to cash out the machine receiving a ticket for over $100. The outlet was able to cancel the ticket so it could not be cashed and refunded the patron the amount of the winnings. Although captured on video the suspect remains unknown.

The police were dispatched to a report of an assault having occurred at a residence on January 7. Investigation revealed that a 32-year-old female barged her way into the residence assaulting both the 50 year old female homeowner and a 30-year-old female guest. The 32-year-old female was subsequently located and is facing two charges of assault and will be making a court appearance. This is an isolated incident where the people are known to each other and there is no need for public concern.

Police were dispatched to a report of two people fighting in the street on January 6. Upon arrival both people had returned to the house and were having a heated verbal disagreement. A 66-year-old male and 65-year-old female were involved. The female was given a ride to her residence. No further police action was required. Alcohol was a contributing factor.
